Mezzetta Inc. is voluntarily recalling a certain lot number of Mezzetta GOLDEN GREEK PEPERONCINI MEDIUM HEAT, 32-ounce, due to concerns of a potential pest contaminant in the jar, an alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said. We have contacted the consumer and have moved quickly to investigate the situation and initiate a voluntary recall," the alert said in part. A video posted to TikTok circulated earlier this month and now has over 230,000 views shows what appears to be a rodent floating in the jar of peppers. "Here with the pot roast I wanted to make, Mississippi style, but there's a dead baby mouse, there's a dead baby mouse in my pepperoncini's," a woman in the video says in part.
There have been no reported illnesses or injuries related to the recall, the alert notes. No other products are included in the recall. Newsweek reached out to G.
Mezzetta Inc. via email on Monday night for comment. According to the alert, the recall only impacts GOLDEN GREEK PEPERONCINI MEDIUM HEAT, 32 oz., with a lot number of 720106 and SKU number of 10106328. The alert says the company has identified where the recalled product was distributed and the customers who received the product.
The alert says the company is "working directly with them to isolate and remove the affected product from sale." The product referenced in the original consumer report has been requested to be retrieved and analyzed to review sanitation and food safety records as well as the relevant production, the alert says. People who have purchased the recalled peppers are urged not to consume them and to contact the company via email at [email protected]. Numerous recalls have been issued this year across the country due to the potential for damage, foodborne illness, contamination, lack of inspection or undeclared food allergens.
Recently, federal officials also announced a recent recall from Star Meat Delivery Inc. impacting about 167,639 pounds of raw beef, pork and goat because the goods were produced without federal inspection. The latest recall impacting the jarred peperoncini comes amid heightened fears and attention to foodborne illnesses and recalls, including national cases of salmonella and cyclospora.
