After starting the 2026 season with a 23-10 win over the Tennessee Titans, the New York Jets have been struggling mightily. The Jets have lost each of their last three games as they enter Week 5. With this, they now have a 1-3 record and are third in the AFC East.
With the Jets struggling, it would not be particularly surprising if they looked to add to their roster. One of their top needs is another quarterback, and they are now being linked to an intriguing one from the San Francisco 49ers. In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Kristopher Knox listed the Jets as a potential landing spot for 49ers quarterback Mac Jones.
"To be clear, Mac Jones remains the best quarterback for teams in need of an immediate starter to target," Knox wrote. "Potential Suitors: Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets." Seeing the Jets named as a potential suitor for Jones is understandable. It would not hurt for them to have more competition for their starting quarterback job, even if Geno Smith has had a good start to the season.
However, if Smith struggles down the stretch, it would only make more sense for New York to make a major push for Jones. Jones showed last season with the 49ers that he can still be an impactful NFL quarterback. In 11 games with the 49ers in 2025, he threw 13 touchdowns, 2,151 passing yards, and completed 69.6% of his passes.
With this, the former Pro Bowler would be an interesting quarterback for the Jets to add to their roster. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if the Jets end up pursuing Jones this season. The fit looks good on paper between the six-year NFL veteran and New York.
