The Canadian electronic pop duo of Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus are returning in February with The Gore, a follow-up and companion album to 2022's Waiting Game that Greenspan describes as "a polarized articulation of the same thing." Born out of a period of grief and loss following the deaths of Greenspan's father and a close friend from his youth and shaped by a nostalgia for horror, sci-fi, and experimental film, The Gore was conceptualized as a deliberately noisier, messier record. "What if you made an album like Fresh by Sly and the Family Stone, or Here, My Dear by Marvin Gaye — messy records — but with the sonic language of Pan Sonic," Green explains in a statement. "Of course, I'm not good at translating that idea into something that actually sounds like that.
Which, to be honest, has been a great asset — if I were able to faithfully rip off everything I wanted to rip off, I'd just sound like a ripoff." Along with the announcement, the Boys are sharing the enigmatically burbling and echoing lead single "Underneath The Moon." According to Greenspan, "This song is deeply inspired by the 2022 horror film Skinamarink. I used old tape loop techniques using an old Tascam tape machine to achieve a number of the effects in the film, to work as a sort of homage to the ephemeral quality of analog recording tech."
