Andrew Phung, an eight-time Canadian Screen Award winner known for “Kim’s Convenience” and “Run the Burbs,” is boarding Quentin Lee‘s horror-comedy “Curse of Undead” as star and producer. Phung will play protagonist Pancho Dang in the Canada-Philippines co-production, which follows a struggling Canadian filmmaker battling a zombie outbreak unleashed by a Filipino sorcerer, while uncovering a curse tied to the documentary meant to launch his career. The screenplay, based on an original story by Lee, was written by Lee and New York Times bestselling author Grady Hendrix, whose novels include “My Best Friend’s Exorcism,” adapted into a feature by Amazon Studios, and “How to Sell a Haunted House.” Phung and Lee met at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards, where a comedy special co-produced by Lee and Cindy Au Yeung, “Comedy Invasion,” took home the top prize in its category.
When Lee and Au Yeung reworked “Curse of Undead” into a Canada-Philippines co-production, Lee brought the project to Phung, who signed on after connecting with the screenplay. It’s big, it’s bold, it’s a zombie horror movie like you’ve never seen before. The script and story just jump off the page.

I was thrilled that he loved the screenplay and wanted to join us – not only as our leading man, but also as a producer.” Roger Garcia, former executive director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival and the Asian Film Awards Academy, serves as executive producer and began developing the screenplay with Lee more than a decade ago. Lee, Au Yeung and Phung will finance and produce through British Columbia-based Margin Films Ltd., with production targeted for winter 2027.
Lee is also preparing to launch the third season of “Comedy InvAsian,” the Asian American stand-up comedy series he created with Koji Steven Sakai, on Oct. 1 via AAM.tv, Amazon Prime Video, Hoopla and Tubi.
