Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to their first NBA title since 1973 this past season, taking down the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. Brunson closed out the series with a historic 45-point performance in Game 5, securing Finals MVP honors. This performance also landed him a new nickname: The King of New York.
During a recent appearance on the "Road Trippin' Show" podcast, Brunson explained why he refuses to use that nickname. "Imagine I get on this call with you, right? I’m like, ‘Yo, King of New York’s here.’ You guys are going to look like, ‘What the [expletive] this dude is so self-centered.’” While Brunson won't call himself "The King of New York," Knicks fans certainly will.
The 30-year-old point guard averaged 32.6 points per game in his team's five-game series win over Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs. The Knicks will begin their 2026-27 regular-season schedule with a highly-anticipated matchup against the new-look Philadelphia 76ers on Oct. 20.
