Knitted Jackets Are This Season’s Stylish Lightweight Layer–Mango’s Belted Cardigan Design Is So Flattering

When it's too hot for a coat, but just cold enough to need a layer of some kind.

There's no denying that summer is well and truly long gone, but the weather still seems to be in that awkward in-between stage where we can't quite work out how to dress appropriately for the current temperature. It's too warm for a coat–a lesson I learned the hard way, when a clammy commute into work had me arriving at the office looking like a sweaty mess. But there is now a chill in the air, meaning a layer in some shape or form is now an essential requirement when leaving the house.

So, what should that layer be? The decision is made for you when it's raining, as you're obviously reaching for your raincoat. A trench coat and leather jackets are both good transseasonal items, but even those feel a little too heavy right now.

Instead, we're turning to a new style that's emerging as October's lightweight hero layer: a knitted jacket. A knitted jacket is essentially a more substantial cardigan, with a more structured silhouette and featuring a chunkier knitting technique. Some styles also have additional design details you wouldn't find on a typical cardigan.

We've spotted a few, but top of our wish list is Mango's knitted jacket with belt. With a funnel neck silhouette, it taps into one of this season's biggest outerwear trends, while the belted design promises a flattering fit and counteracts any risk of bulkiness that comes with the thicker knit. In a warm biscuit brown colorway, it will work effortlessly with just about anything in your wardrobe.

Pair it with a long-sleeve tee and jeans for casual weekends, or layer it atop a check midi skirt and boots for more formal occasions.
