Exclusive: ‘When we finally got down to the end of it, I was getting emotional,’ actor revealed of scene

Just two episodes into Lanterns, a famous DC supervillain reared his head – and lead star Kyle Chandler has shared the experience of filming the pivotal scene. In the closing moments of the HBO Max show’s second episode, Chandler’s Hal Jordan breaks an oath to visit his traitorous former mentor, Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen), who’s imprisoned in space. Despite being trapped behind bars, Sinestro revealed that he knows all about John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), whom Hal is hesitantly training as his replacement on Earth.

When we finally got down to the end of it, I was getting emotional with [Thomsen] because the scene’s pretty tough.” Hinting at their encounter to come, Chandler continued: “There’s this huge piece of dialogue between the two of us. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with all that dialogue. I understand the story and all, but to make it personal, I found myself, as we were running the scene, going into, personal life, because I’m trying to ground myself with having this conversation with him, trying to find something to make the three minutes of talking worthy of people sitting there.

I don’t want them to and go and get a ham sandwich.” Showrunner Chris Mundy and executive producer Damon Lindelof said that Sinestro was a Hannibal Lecter-lite figure to Hal, telling Entertainment Weekly: “The idea that Sinestro is out there is really, really important to understanding who Hal is. No one is gonna be able to poke at Hal’s reluctance to cede the ring more than Sinestro will.” Sinestro was played by Mark Strong in the 2011 Green Lantern film, which starred Ryan Reynolds, who famously disliked the movie. In the DC Comics, he is a former Green Lantern Corps member who was dishonourably discharged for abusing his power.
