Although the Cleveland Browns officially decided on their starting quarterback, their QB room continues to bring intriguing developments, including potential trade speculation. On Sunday, Cleveland.com and Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot reported that the Browns "would like to keep 6th-round QB Taylen Green on the 53 today if they can find a way to do it." Green, who played college football at Arkansas and Boise State, completed 5 of 7 passes for 27 yards in the team's 37-13 preseason win over the New England Patriots. He was one of two backup quarterbacks the Browns played for that game, with Dillon Gabriel getting the majority of snaps.
Gabriel shined in the time he had to work with, completing 12 of 15 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions or sacks. That may have drawn some attention as the team works on its final roster for the regular season. While Sanders didn't do anything spectacular as a starter, he played well enough for the team to compete, as Watson recovered from a surgery setback during the season. Sanders is now QB2 on the depth chart. Gabriel, also a rookie last season, took over as the team's starter when Joe Flacco was benched after starting the first four games.
However, Gabriel suffered a concussion in Week 11, and Sanders took over as the starter. This offseason, it appears Gabriel could be someone the team might want to trade, and based on the recent roster news, they might be working on that move. As of this writing, nothing has been confirmed or reported about trade talks, though.
In Gabriel's six games as a starter last season, he posted a 1-5 record, throwing for 937 yards and seven touchdowns, with two interceptions, and a low QBR of 31.4. Those numbers aren't enough to wow any team about Gabriel as a starting QB, but he could be someone a team might add to the roster to develop further under a veteran or more established starter. Time will tell if Cleveland makes a move or sticks with who they have.
