Two people were killed and at least 25 others injured when a shooting erupted at a homecoming block party in Vienna, Georgia, early on Sunday, according to authorities. In another high-profile mass shooting in the US over the weekend, a 12-year-old girl was shot and killed and three others were wounded after gunfire evidently broke out over a parking spot in a Baltimore park on Saturday, officials said. The violence in Georgia occurred at a gathering of more than 1,000 people, local sheriff Craig Peavy told area news outlet WMAZ.
Shots were fired at about 50 people in two locations about a block apart just after 1am on Sunday, Peavy told WMAZ. The pair killed at the scene were not immediately identified, and neither were suspects or a possible motive for the gunfire. Peavy added that about 25 people were taken to the hospital, as many as 35 people may have been wounded, and deputies were monitoring the crowd at the time of the shooting.
Meanwhile, with respect to the shooting in Baltimore, police commissioner Richard Worley said two suspects were being sought after two different types of gun cartridges were found at the scene of the violence near a youth football event at Leon Day Park. A 25-year-old woman with the girl was shot, too. And so were two men, ages 23 and 28, according to police.
None of the three wounded victims were believed to have life-threatening injuries, police said. The 12-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, and paramedics took the woman to the hospital. The two other victims walked into a nearby hospital with injuries.
The archive, a nonpartisan reference resources, defines mass shootings as cases in which at least four victims are killed or wounded. The US perennially has high rates of such shootings, fueling calls from some quarters for more substantial federal gun control. But Congress has not passed such measures over the years.
