Starting pitcher Sonny Gray may have made the final start of his MLB career last week against the New York Yankees, let alone his last outing in a Boston Red Sox uniform. Gray was controversially removed from Game 2 of the Red Sox's AL Wild Card series versus the Yankees with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and New York leading just 1-0. Boston's bullpen imploded after Gray was taken out and the Red Sox's season ended with a 9-2 loss.
The three-time All-Star went viral on social media during his start too, after viewers spotted what appeared to be a sticky substance on his neck throughout the game. MassLive.com Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo reported on Tuesday that MLB "looked into" Gray following the contest, but the right-hander is unlikely to face any punishment. Gray allowed two runs on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts across 4 2/3 innings pitched against the Yankees.
Louis Cardinals traded Gray to Boston last November and the 36-year-old had one of the best seasons of his 14-year career. The 2011 first-round pick finished the regular season with a career-high and American League-leading 18 wins, as well as a 2.72 ERA in 169 innings pitched covering 29 regular season starts.
