Primary aldosteronism is one of the most common forms of endocrine hypertension and is associated with increased cardiometabolic risks. Alterations in corticosteroid secretion, including aldosterone, are a characteristic of the disorder, but little is known about the detail of these changes as research has historically relied on blood samples taken at a single timepoint during office hours. A new paper has sought to develop a method to collect more information about how levels of corticosteroids change over the course of a day in these patients.
The authors suggest that using dynamic hormone profiling in this way is a viable system and might offer useful diagnostic information.
