The Washington Nationals locked down one of their top performers as the 2026 season winds down. Before he takes the mound on Friday night, the Nationals announced a four-year contract extension for starting pitcher Cade Cavalli. The new deal includes a 2031 club option.
According to The Athletic's Spencer Nusbaum, Cavalli will receive $47 million over the four years before the Nationals can exercise a $23 million option. The contract buys out his final three years of arbitration, giving him at least one more season under contract. The 28-year-old has cemented himself as Washington's staff ace with a 3.12 ERA and 194 strikeouts in 164.2 innings.
Cavalli has only gotten stronger throughout the year, posting a 2.05 ERA in 11 second-half outings, all but one of which were a quality start. He's notched 51 strikeouts in his last seven turns. The Nationals finalized the deal hours before Cavalli starts Friday's game against the St.
He could make another start in the regular season's final week for Washington, which is eliminated from playoff contention at 71-82.
