This NBA offseason, basketball legend LeBron James made the major decision to join the fourth team of his career, the Philadelphia 76ers, creating a powerhouse contender in the Eastern Conference. Their lineup already featured All-Stars in Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, and had recently added Jaylen Brown via a surprising offseason trade with the Boston Celtics. Last season, 76ers newcomer VJ Edgecombe also showed he has the ability to make an impact as a potential future star.
James, 41, spent the past eight years with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he racked up more impressive stats, broke multiple longstanding records, and claimed his fourth NBA championship. Now, he's attempting to do something else that's unprecedented in the NBA: win a championship with a fourth team. And with that has come criticism of James for jumping from team to team, or "championship chasing," as some like to call it.
During recent remarks from retired basketball star Stephen Jackson, he didn't hold back with his opinion of one of basketball's greatest of all-time. "Going to a team that's already championship-ready, that's not really what I would look at as the best player in the league challenging himself," the 2003 Spurs champion said.
"I don't think that was a best player in the league move or what a guy that I respect as best player in the league would do." Ahead of James deciding to sign with Philadelphia on a two-year deal, speculation swirled about where he would finish out his career. The Cleveland Cavaliers made a lot of sense since James is from Ohio, began his career with the Cavs, and returned after several seasons away in Miami to help the team win its first-ever championship. King James also had the Heat among potential destinations, which was another team where he won two of his championships.
During those seasons, he played alongside fellow All-Stars Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. If he opted to sign with the Heat to end his career, some might have contended that he was joining a team that already had All-Star Bam Adebayo and had traded with the Milwaukee Bucks to get Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason. Nonetheless, James has proved himself among the all-time greats with Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, particularly due to his impressive records and longevity in the league, demonstrating an unbelievable ability to keep playing at such a high-level.
