Nearly all of Nevada is under fire weather watches or red flag warnings heading into the weekend as forecasters warn that a combination of strong winds, extremely low humidity and dry vegetation could create conditions favorable for rapid wildfire growth. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued fire weather watches covering large portions of northern, central and southern Nevada for Saturday, with multiple forecast offices warning that any fires could spread quickly before containment. The warnings come just weeks after Nevada's Hawk Fire demonstrated how quickly wildfires can explode under hot, dry and windy conditions.
The blaze north of Reno grew to roughly 15,000 acres in about a day after igniting in late August, fueled by strong winds, low humidity and extremely dry vegetation. Fire officials said the fire repeatedly changed direction and displayed extreme behavior, underscoring why forecasters issue red flag warnings when similar weather conditions are expected. The most widespread alert was issued by the NWS office in Elko, which placed much of northern and central Nevada under a fire weather watch from Saturday morning through Saturday evening.
Forecasters warned of sustained southwest winds of 20-25 mph, gusts approaching 45 mph and humidity levels falling as low as 9 percent. Officials said any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. "We are still within fire season for our area," NWS Elko meteorologist William Vinson told Newsweek, adding that fire season in Nevada doesn't typically end until October.
Additional watches issued by the NWS in Las Vegas cover Esmeralda County, Nye County, the Sheep Range, Spring Mountains and portions of Clark and Lincoln counties. Those areas could see south winds of 15-25 mph, gusts up to 35 mph and humidity ranging between 5 percent and 20 percent. The agency urged residents to avoid activities that could create sparks and to follow local fire restrictions.
The NWS office in Reno has issued red flag warnings across much of its forecast area in western Nevada. Some areas could experience gusts up to 45 mph, while wind-prone locations along U.S. 395 may see gusts between 55 and 65 mph. Relative humidity could fall as low as 8 percent in parts of the state.
Red flag warnings are more severe than fire weather watches. A fire weather watch means dangerous wildfire conditions are possible in the coming days, while a red flag warning means those conditions are imminent or already occurring, creating a heightened risk that any fire could spread rapidly. The overlapping alerts mean nearly every region of Nevada is facing elevated fire danger heading into Saturday.
