New iPhone 18 May Signal Higher Prices Ahead

iPhone 18 prices may rise by $100 or more as AI-driven chip costs hit consumers, signaling wider tech price increases.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 lineup, expected to be unveiled in September 2026, could become one of the first major consumer products to reflect what analysts call "AI inflation," as surging demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure drives up the cost of key smartphone components. According to analyst estimates cited by The Washington Post, some iPhone 18 models could cost at least $100 more than comparable devices launched last year, with Apple also reportedly considering price increases across parts of its existing iPhone lineup. The expected rise comes as the technology industry grapples with soaring prices for memory chips and other components increasingly being diverted toward AI data centers.

The primary factor behind the anticipated increase is a global memory chip shortage linked to the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure. Companies including Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Meta are investing hundreds of billions of dollars into AI-focused data centers, creating unprecedented demand for specialized memory products. As manufacturers such as Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron shift production toward high-bandwidth memory used in AI servers, the supply of memory chips for consumer electronics has tightened significantly.

TrendForce reported that memory prices have been in a "major upcycle" since late 2025, placing substantial pressure on smartphone makers including Apple. The market intelligence firm estimates prices for the iPhone 18 family could rise by 10 to 20 percent as component costs increase. Analyst Jeff Pu of GF Securities has predicted that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models could cost between $200 and $300 more than their predecessors because of higher costs for advanced processors, DRAM memory and NAND storage, according to Forbes.

The prospect of higher iPhone prices highlights a broader economic trend some are calling AI inflation. A single high-end AI server can consume vastly more memory than a consumer smartphone, leading technology companies to compete for the same components. According to reporting by The Washington Post, the enormous scale of investment into AI infrastructure is reshaping semiconductor supply chains and pushing up costs across the technology sector.

Apple has already signaled that rising component costs are becoming difficult to absorb. In June, the company increased prices on several Mac and iPad products, with some configurations seeing hikes of up to $500. Analysts at the time warned that iPhones would likely be next.

Beyond pricing, Apple's upcoming launch is expected to focus heavily on AI capabilities. TrendForce says the iPhone 18 Pro lineup will feature Apple's new A20 Pro processor built on TSMC's 2-nanometer manufacturing process, aimed at improving on-device AI performance while boosting efficiency. The company is also expected to introduce upgraded cooling systems, improved cameras and larger batteries.
