San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw is suspended one game without pay due to his actions during Sunday's Week 5 win over the Seattle Seahawks, the NFL announced on Monday. During the second quarter of Sunday's NFC West matchup, Greenlaw used his helmet to head-butt Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who was not wearing a helmet. The NFL classified Greenlaw's punishment under “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.” Greenlaw, who was ejected from the game, can appeal the decision.
"Any appeal will be heard and decided upon by either Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera, or James Thrash, the hearing officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to decide appeals of on-field player discipline," the NFL said in its statement. This marks the second straight week that Greenlaw has received NFL punishment. Following the 49ers' Week 4 win over the Denver Broncos, he was fined $11,941 for taunting head coach Sean Payton.
Greenlaw will miss Week 6's "Monday Night Football" matchup against the Washington Commanders. He'll be eligible to return to the 49ers' 53-man active roster the following day on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
