Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was hit with two separate fines for unsportsmanlike conduct following this year's Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills: $14,926 for illegal celebrations and vulgar acts and $11,941 for taunting. Williams appealed each of these fines, and won both. Williams argued that his "brief gesture" was not offensive as "marijuana is legal in some states if that was the gesture he was making.“ NFL appeals officer Derrick Brooks issued this statement along with the reversal of Williams' fines.
One week after the Lions' Week 2 loss to the Bills, Williams was fined an additional $23,417 for unnecessary roughness, use of the helmet in a Week 3 win over the New York Jets. Williams reeled in two catches during this past Sunday's Week 5 win over the Arizona Cardinals, both of which resulted in touchdown scores. The 3-2 Lions are entering their Week 6 bye.
