Nick Wright took an ESPN employee to task for a controversial Matthew Stafford stance. Dan Orlovsky, who played for the Detroit Lions a year before they drafted Stafford, claimed that Stafford could be considered among the top-five or top-seven greatest quarterbacks in NFL history if he leads the Los Angeles Rams to another Super Bowl championship. Nick Wright thought that comment went beyond the usual hot take.
The Fox Sports analyst blasted Orlovsky on his "What's Wright With Nick Wright" podcast. "Some opinions are not only wrong, they're unacceptable," Wright said. "And saying that we could end this season with Matt Stafford potentially as a top-five quarterback is one of those unacceptable opinions." Wright insisted that he supported Stafford more than many of his media peers last year, arguing that winning an MVP would solidify Stafford's Hall-of-Fame candidacy.
He received some pushback from critics who didn't consider Stafford a Canton lock. "Because as of last season, prior to last season I should say, he was a two-time Pro Bowler, zero-time All-Pro. That doesn't feel like Hall-of-Fame caliber," Wright said.
"But because of the counting numbers, because of his great playoff numbers, because he had a Super Bowl, because he played for so long at a high -- and then peaking at the end, very high -- level, I made the case, he wins league MVP, he's gonna check all the boxes. He'll be a Hall of Famer. Not everyone agreed with that case, by the way." Wright considers it "asinine" to jump from debating whether Stafford will make the Hall of Fame to whether he's one of the best quarterbacks ever.
"I personally, even if they win the Super Bowl this year, would not have Matt Stafford in the top five of quarterbacks of the last 25 years," Wright declared. And I don't think you guys would either. If they win the Super Bowl this year, I would not have him ahead of Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees."
