Police and federal authorities are investigating reports of a shooting close to a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, which has left at least one person dead. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Columbus said in a post on X that agents were responding to the reported incident on the 2200 block of Albert Avenue in the city, noting it was close to the Alrahma Mosque. Police later said the incident was not an attack on the mosque but happened at a nearby apartment complex.
"This investigation is in its’ infancy," an ATF spokesperson told Newsweek. "Personnel at the scene are still trying to determine the facts and circumstances that led to the shooting. I can confirm one victim is deceased and the condition of the second victim is unknown.
Identities of the victims are not being released." The Columbus Dispatch reported that the shooting happened during a funeral at the mosque, citing a photographer at the scene. Local TV news showed police trying to manage a crowd of people in the street nearby. Newsweek also reached out to the police department, the FBI, the Alrahma Mosque, and Ohio Department of Public Safety for comment Monday afternoon.
