For the first time, Comerica Park will have a new name next year. The Detroit Tigers and Fifth Third Bank announced Monday that the team’s downtown Detroit ballpark will be renamed Fifth Third Park beginning with the 2027 season, ending more than 26 years of the Comerica Park name. The change follows Fifth Third Bancorp’s acquisition of Comerica Incorporated.
The merger was completed in February, and the resulting ownership change set the stage for the ballpark’s rebranding. Comerica Park opened in 2000 as the Tigers’ home after the team left Tiger Stadium. The first game was played April 11, 2000, against the Seattle Mariners.
Comerica Bank agreed in 1998 to pay $66 million over 30 years for naming rights to the new ballpark. The agreement was extended in 2018 through 2034. The Tigers and Fifth Third announced the new name at a news conference Monday, Sept. 21.
The current name will remain in use through the end of the 2026 season, with signage around the ballpark scheduled to be changed during the offseason. The Tigers are scheduled to open their 2027 home schedule against the Chicago White Sox on March 25. The club’s Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens, plays at Fifth Third Field. The West Michigan Whitecaps, the Tigers’ High-A affiliate, also played at a ballpark called Fifth Third Ballpark for about two decades before the venue was renamed LMCU Park in 2021. The renaming will be the first formal name change for the Tigers’ downtown ballpark since it opened.
The stadium has also picked up informal names over the years, which might persist despite the corporate reshuffling. Because they fell short of a postseason berth, construction crews are safe to take down the old signage after Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
