Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning is soaking up the moment after his team's huge 41-27 win over the USC Trojans on Saturday. As he's making the media rounds on Monday, he's also being asked about his "mic-drop moment" at the end of his postgame press conference, in which he added an insult to the loss the Trojans already suffered. Lanning, pointing to his Ducks' 3-0 record against the Trojans during his tenure, spoke directly to recruits in the Southern California area.
"Three wins against these guys," he said. "I guess if you're interested in winning football games and you're from this area, you should go to Oregon. If you want to go to a Chris Brown concert, you should go here." That jab raised eyebrows across the college football world, as did Lanning's refusal on Monday to back down.
Appearing on "Wake Up Barstool" on FS1, Lanning told host Dave Portnoy that the Chris Brown remark and another comment he made about USC's crowd size were "probably a little petty," but he's not sorry. "They've taken plenty of shots at us. In the off season, there were some shots taken, and somebody asked me what matters most and I said, 'Winning.' That's what I like to go point back to, when we get the opportunity to play them, we've won," he said.
Lanning did clarify, however, that what he said was not intended to be an insult to Brown, of whom he's a fan. "I like Chris Brown, and maybe someday I could go to a Chris Brown [show]," he said. "But the reason I picked him is our chief of staff told me before the game, 'Hey, there's a Chris Brown concert in LA tonight, so that's why I picked Chris Brown.
No other reason." Lanning seems to be intimating that there's too much going on in Los Angeles for it to be a real college football town, something Trojans fans would surely push back on. That said, they can't argue with Lanning's 3-0 record against them. Perhaps if USC wins the next matchup with Oregon, it'll be the Trojans, not a singer, who is the big draw in town that night.
