Oregon Wins Dubious Title from The Athletic

The Oregon Ducks were awarded a sort of backhanded compliment.

For many, it's their adventurous and infinitely customizable uniforms. Or perhaps people think of their home, Autzen Stadium, or their history of having great quarterback play. From Joey Harrington to Marcus Mariota, Justin Herbert, Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel, the Ducks signal caller has for years been one of the best QBs in the country, if not the best.

Despite all of that, though, the Ducks lack one major honor as a program: They haven't won a national title. It's strange, but despite national title game berths in 2010 and 2014 and College Football Playoff appearances in 2024 and 2025, the Ducks have never won a title. Antonio Morales of The Athletic ranked the best programs without a title in the last 50 years and pointed out that since their Rose Bowl appearance in 1994, Oregon has been incredibly successful, including 16 10-win seasons since 2000.

"The Ducks have played for the national championship twice (2010 and 2014) and have won conference championships in the Pac-12 and Big Ten. They’ve become a premier destination for recruits and are clearly an elite program," Morales wrote. "All Oregon is missing is a national championship." It feels like every season, that might change, and 2026 is no different.

The Ducks are the No. 2 team in the ' preseason rankings, and ESPN expects another 10-win season this year. That would almost certainly be enough to get Oregon into the CFP for another shot at the title, but they are coming off of a devastating end to last season. They lost 56-22 in the Peach Bowl to Indiana, the eventual national champions, but they never really had a chance in the game.

Indiana cornerback D'Angelo Ponds picked off Oregon QB Dante Moore on the first play of the game and returned it for a touchdown, setting the tone for the beatdown. If coach Dan Lanning can get his team ready for another postseason run, they're most assuredly talented enough to win it all. The question, though, is if the sting of that loss to Indiana and a history of losing big games will be overcome.

If not, they'll almost assuredly remain the best program to not win a championship in the last 50 years.
