The San Diego Padres signed right-handed relief pitcher Trevor Gott to a minor league deal Tuesday, perhaps looking to strengthen their bullpen before making a push for the postseason. Gott, 34, pitched in parts of eight years in MLB from 2015-23, splitting time with the Los Angeles Angels, Washington Nationals, San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners and New York Mets. The Padres drafted Gott in the sixth round of the 2013 draft, though sent him to the Angels alongside Huston Street.
Gott's Last MLB appearance came in 2023, when he played 64 games between the Mariners and Mets. He dealt with an injury which kept him out of the 2024 season, and bounced around organizations in the following two years before the Nationals' Triple-A affiliate released him in June. In the minors this season, Gott posted a 3.55 ERA through 26 appearances, striking out 27 batters across 33 innings pitched.
If he continues to produce solid results like that in the PCL, he could very well find himself in the majors before too long. Gott had a solid start to his time in the majors, posting a 3.02 ERA through 48 appearances during his rookie season with the Angels in 2015. He followed that up with nine solid performances for the Nationals in 2016, posting a 1.50 ERA, and stayed there for two more years while posting a 9.00 across those years.
His next two seasons came with the San Francisco Giants in 2019 and 2020, where he had a 5.46 ERA through 65 appearances—all of which came out of the bullpen. After a year out of the majors in 2021, Gott resurfaced with the Milwaukee Brewers, with whom he played 45 games. He posted a 4.14 ERA in 45.2 innings before landing with the Mariners in 2023.
Gott had a rough return after his injury in 2024, posting a 7.40 ERA in the minors across 24 appearances in 2025, but seems to have things figured out this season. If he can hit the ground running with Triple-A El Paso upon his arrival in the PCL, he could very well assist the Padres as they chase a postseason spot. Heading into Tuesday's games, the Padres trailed the Diamondbacks by 0.5 games—and with an all-important series between the two clubs on the horizon, the Padres will look to claim the spot and make the postseason yet again.
