The San Diego Padres reinstated right-handed pitcher Mason Miller from the postseason paternity list ahead of their NLDS Game 4 matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers. Miller went to the paternity list after the Padres' Game 2 loss against the Brewers on Sunday, during which he threw 40 pitches and blew a save in a difficult ninth inning. The Padres managed a narrow win at home in Game 3 without Miller, but had to rely on starter Michael King, who started the second game of the series, to close out the contest.
The Padres will be relieved to have Miller back, as he is one of the best closers in the game. Miller spent his first full season with the Padres in 2026 after the Athletics trade him at the 2025 deadline, and didn't disappoint in his new threads. He posted a 1.67 ERA over the course of 70 innings pitched, striking out 129 batters while recording a National-League leading 38 games.
For his efforts during the 2026 season, Miller earned his first All-Star appearance with the Padres and the second of his career. He logged his first save of the postseason against the Chicago Cubs during the Wild Card round, but struggled during his second appearance of October against the Brewers. He came in for a six-out save, getting through the eighth inning easily before encountering some trouble in the ninth.
Miller walked the bases loaded in the ninth, and outfielder Jackson Chourio singled to bring home two runs and win the game down to his team's last strike. After a day of rest with his family, though, Miller is sure to be rejuvenated and ready to perform in front of an eccentric crowd at Petco Park. Down two games to one, the Padres will rely on Walker Buehler to give them a good start against the Brewers and starter Robert Gasser, who is making his first appearance of the postseason on Wednesday.
Gasser pitched twice during the Brewers' NLCS run last year, allowing two earned runs through 2.2 innings pitched. The Padres will look to get to him and level the series in Game 4, which begins at 7:00 p.m.
