Patrick Mahomes' Recovery Has Travis Kelce Determined to Perform

Travis Kelce said Patrick Mahomes' recovery process played a big role in his decision to return to the NFL field this season.

Patrick Mahomes' 2025 NFL season came to an end in Week 15 as he suffered a torn ACL injury. The Kansas City Chiefs finished the year with a 6-11 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Mahomes underwent surgery to repair his torn ACL, beginning a difficult rehab process over the last few months.

However, the superstar quarterback appears to be on track to take the field for the Chiefs' regular-season opener against the Denver Broncos in Week 1. Travis Kelce has watched Mahomes' recovery process closely, and it's inspired him to be the best version of himself heading into the 2026 season. In fact, the quarterback's determination played a significant role in Kelce's decision to return for at least one more NFL campaign.

I could see the determination, I could see the frustration in his mind that it got to this point this year. That’s a huge reason why I’m still playing the game. I want to be there for that guy," Kelce said during the most recent episode of the "New Heights" podcast.

Before his injury last season, Mahomes completed 62.7% of his pass attempts for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while also rushing for a career-high 422 yards and five more scores on the ground. The Chiefs will kickoff against the Broncos at 8:15 p.m. ET in a "Monday Night Football" matchup on Sept. 14.
