Patrick Mahomes was tired of talking about his knee, and he quieted the doubters on "Monday Night Football" when he led the Kansas City Chiefs on a 10-play, 46-yard opening drive that ended with him scampering for a 15-yard touchdown run to take a touchdown lead on the Denver Broncos. Mahomes suffered a torn ACL during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 14. He made a remarkable recovery, returning from surgery to repair both his ACL and LCL to play in Week 1.
Per Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Mahomes shaved some time off of his recovery by immediately having surgery before swelling settled in his knee. Mahomes says he would have been ready to play by around the start of mandatory minicamp. "Usually players wait til AFTER the swelling and inflammation subsides. "This allowed him to jump into and attack his rehab only a few days after the injury. Then he absolutely attacked his rehab, to the point where, when I asked him recently when he knew he was fully good to go, he actually told me 1st week of June.
The dude is veryyyy different in how he deals with and fights back from injuries." Mahomes' knee wasn't an issue for the Chiefs on Monday night. He finished the night going 15 of 27 passing for 184 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He added 23 yards on the ground and one touchdown in the Chiefs' 31-10 win over the Broncos.
The Chiefs didn't have to completely lean on Mahomes. Running back Kenneth Walker III, who signed with Kansas City in free agency, boosted the offense with 173 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries. For more on the Vikings and the NFL, head toNewsweek Sports.
