The New England Patriots will likely be without running back TreVeyon Henderson on Wednesday, Henderson has not practiced since suffering an ankle injury on Aug. 24, so there is uncertainty regarding his status for this week's Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks. It's an unfamiliar position for both the team and player after he appeared in all regular season and postseason games last season, which has brought about an interesting question. If he can't go, who will back up Rhamondre Stevenson?
Apart from Reggie Gilliam, Corey Kiner is the only other running back on the active roster but has very little experience within the system after being acquired via trade from the Arizona Cardinals on Aug. 29. Lan Larison wasn't able to make the team out of training camp, but he has been around for two seasons and was signed back to the practice squad. Hassan Haskins is also on the practice squad, having narrowly missed out on the active roster after being signed late in the summer.
ESPN's Mike Reiss believes there is a strong likelihood in one of the two practice squad members being elevated to join the team in Seattle. Larison, 24, has knowledge of the system after being brought aboard within the first few months of the latest regime change, spending parts of last offseason working with quarterback Drake Maye and under the tutelage of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and head coach Mike Vrabel. Haskins, 26, has experience playing in actual games, though, appearing in 44 of them across stints with the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Chargers.
New England also used him as the primary kick returner during the preseason and worked hard to teach him how to play multiple roles on special teams. The Patriots could opt to keep at least three running backs active on game day, which would likely mean elevating one or both of Larison and Haskins to join Stevenson, Kiner and Gilliam.
