All things considered, it could’ve been much worse for the New England Patriots. When star wide receiver A.J. Brown exited Wednesday’s season-opening loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the third quarter after suffering an ankle injury, many were collectively holding their breath.
The concern among Patriots fans was that Brown had fractured his ankle, which would’ve likely sidelined him for most, if not all of the 2026 season. However, Thursday’s news indicated that Brown had actually suffered a high-ankle sprain and avoided the worst-case scenario. But that doesn’t mean New England is off the hook completely.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Patriots are bracing to be without Brown for up to a month or more as he gets back to 100%. Brown could miss 3-6 weeks with his ankle injury,” Schultz posted on X. Discussions will continue on how to proceed.” Brown had just three receptions for 26 yards against the Seahawks, but the Pats’ passing attack was out of sync all game.
Quarterback Drake Maye threw for just 178 yards and he threw three interceptions. Fortunately for the Patriots, they signed Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $68 million this offseason. He will likely take over as the team’s WR1 while Brown is out while Mack Hollins (four catches, 51 yards) and DeMario Douglas (five catches, 20 yards) will play larger roles in New England’s passing attack.
If the Patriots decide to add a receiver with Brown sidelined, there are some decent options on the free-agent market — Sterling Shephard, Braxton Berrios, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Greg Dortch. They could also consider Darius Slayton, who was surprisingly cut by the New York Giants days ago. Slayton has four seasons with 700 or more yards and two seasons with 50 or more catches under his belt.
