The Los Angeles Rams reportedly brought a familiar face back to their offense. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Miami Dolphins traded wide receiver Tutu Atwell to the Rams for running back Jarquez Hunter. Atwell spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with the Rams before signing a one-year, $1.4 million contract with the Dolphins in March.
The Rams drafted Atwell with the No. 57 pick in 2021 after a three-year stint at Louisville that included a 1,305-yard sophomore season. He didn't touch the ball beyond kick and punt returns as a rookie but gradually earned more responsibilities in Sean McVay's offense. Atwell went from 332 yards in 2022 to 514 yards and three touchdowns in 2023.
He also caught a 38-yard touchdown pass in the Rams' first-round playoff loss to the Detroit Lions. The 5-foot-9 wideout tallied a career-high 562 receiving yards in 2024, but his role diminished last season. Although Atwell was targeted just 15 times over 10 games, his six receptions included an 88-yard touchdown in a Week 4 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
Atwell appeared to end his Rams tenure by joining the Dolphins, who gutted their receiving room by releasing Tyreek Hill and trading Jaylen Waddle this offseason. Malik Washington is their only returning wide receiver who exceeded six receptions for Miami last season, but Atwell remained a preseason cut candidate. Instead, Atwell will get another opportunity in LA.
The Rams may have wanted an insurance policy if the NFL suspends Puka Nacua, who was sued for battery and assault after allegedly biting a woman's shoulder. The Dolphins bring back Hunter, a fourth-round pick who played five games on special teams last season. Hunter amassed 3,929 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns over four seasons at Auburn.
