After the Texas Longhorns' huge come-from-behind win over the then-top ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday, many across the college football world have put the Longhorns as the team to beat. One prominent college football figure, though, isn't sold yet. Speaking on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Tuesday, Rece Davis, the host of "College GameDay" and a play-by-play announcer, said he still doesn't have Texas in the spot.
"I still have Notre Dame ranked at No. 1," Davis said. "I put Texas No. 2 because I wanted to honor the victory. But if you watched the entire game — and I realize it's a far greater opponent than Notre Dame has faced so far — but kind of watching the whole game, it was really hard to get to the place where I think this is the best team in the country." As Davis detailed, Texas' eventual 24-23 win came after they went down 23-3.
Granted, some of that was due to freak plays like an interception that appeared to have been caught by wide receiver Cam Coleman, only for the ball to pop free as he hit the ground — and head directly into a Buckeye's hands. Despite such demoralizing swings — and a 151-yard, two-touchdown performance by Ohio State's superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith — Texas was able to come back. That first half, though, left Davis scratching his head.
He noted that as things currently stand, the Longhorns "certainly have the best win and the best moment," but they haven't shown that they're the best team yet. "They've got other great opportunities, a trip to Tennessee coming up," Davis said. "Tennessee I think is really good, maybe even better than I anticipated, but I don't have them on top right now, just because the entire game, they didn't always look like No. 1." That game on Sept. 26 could prove definitive for Davis and others, so if the Longhorns come home with a win, don't be surprised to see that Davis finally puts them in the top spot come October.
