Red Sox Linked to Blockbuster Trade for All-Star Shortstop

The Boston Red Sox are being connected to Houston Astros star shortstop Jeremy Pena ahead of the offseason.

The Boston Red Sox should be aggressively looking to improve their roster this offseason after being dominated by the New York Yankees in the AL Wild Card Series. One of the Red Sox's top needs heading into the offseason is an upgrade at the shortstop position. Because of this, they are now being linked to a star shortstop from the Houston Astros.

In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Kerry Miller named Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena as a "prime target" for the Red Sox this offseason. "And because they rather expect Arias to be a key piece of the puzzle by no later than 2028, trading for a multi-year solution a la CJ Abrams, Zach Neto or Corey Seager probably isn't the route they want to go, if they can instead get one year of Pena at a not-too-exorbitant cost," Miller wrote. With the Red Sox needing another star middle infielder, it makes sense that they are being connected to Pena.

The 29-year-old is a top trade candidate on the Astros heading into the offseason and would be a major addition for a team wanting to be contenders like the Red Sox. If the Red Sox landed Pena, he would give them another All-Star-caliber player to work with. He would slot nicely in the front half of Boston's batting order and would also give them another former Gold Glove winner.

In 112 games this season with the Astros, Pena posted 22 home runs, 56 RBI, and a .277 batting average. This was after he had 17 home runs, 62 RBI, and a .304 batting average in 125 games with Houston as an All-Star in 2025. With numbers like these, he would be a strong pickup for the Red Sox.

It will be intriguing to see if they pursue him from here.
