As the Detroit Red Wings get closer to their regular season opener against the New York Rangers, they have significantly trimmed their training camp roster by placing several players on waivers. According to PuckPedia, the Red Wings have placed Jacob Bryson, Cameron Butler, Sheldon Dries, William Lagesson, John Leonard, and Dominik Shine on waivers. Out of these six players, Bryson is the most notable to be hitting the waiver wire.
The 28-year-old defenseman signed with Detroit this offseason and has 304 games of NHL experience. Teams looking more for defensive depth could consider taking a flier on him. Butler spent most of last season in the ECHL with the Iowa Heartlanders, where he posted nine goals and 20 points in 30 games.
The 24-year-old forward also scored one goal in 16 AHL games for the Iowa Wild in 2025-26. Dries played in five games for the Red Wings last season, where he failed to get on the scoresheet. He also posted 23 goals and 45 points in 57 AHL games with the Grand Rapids Griffins last season.
Lagesson spent all of last season with the Griffins, posting three goals and 21 points in 61 games. He last played at the NHL level during the 2024-25 season with the Red Wings, where he posted one assist. Leonard posted two goals and four points in 11 games for the Red Wings last season.
He also had 33 goals and 54 points in 47 games with the Griffins during the 2025-26 season. As for Shine, he scored three goals in 18 games for Detroit last season. In the AHL with Grand Rapids, he posted 21 goals and 38 points.
It will now be interesting to see which of these Red Wings players end up passing through waivers unclaimed from here.
