Red Wings Punish Dylan Larkin Amid Holdout, Issue Terse Statement

The Red Wings issued a terse statement from GM Shawn Horcoff after deciding to suspend former captain Dylan Larkin without pay.

The Detroit Red Wings took disgruntled veteran Dylan Larkin's discipline one step further on Thursday, Oct. 29, suspending him without pay. Larkin formally requested a trade in June, then was stripped of his captaincy in September. Wednesday, he informed the team he intended to sit out until he was traded.

"Dylan Larkin has informed us that he will no longer play for the Detroit Red Wings," general manager Shawn Horcoff said in a statement. "We are disappointed by his decision, particularly given his obligations to the organization and his teammates. We have therefore suspended Dylan without pay.

"We will continue to explore trade opportunities involving Dylan. In addition to needing his approval, any trade must also be in the best interests of the Detroit Red Wings and support the organization's long-term goals. I want to thank and commend our coaches and players for their continued focus, and being committed to competing every day." According to the Detroit Free Press' Helene St.

James, Larkin recently expanded his trade list to include 10 teams: the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Utah Mammoth, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, and Colorado Avalanche. It's a bitter ending for the 30-year-old Michigan native, who played 818 regular season games for the Wings across 12 NHL seasons. When healthy, he's a top-six center In 2025-26, he scored a career-high 34 goals, including 14 on the power play. Nine of those goals were game-winners for the Red Wings, who went 41-31-10 under Todd McLellan last season, and missed the playoffs for the 10th consecutive year. Horcoff understandably doesn't want to take a step back in the Atlantic Division and run the team's playoff drought to 11 seasons.

What's remarkable is that Larkin's holdout has persisted even though the general manager he criticized for not doing more to improve last year's roster — Steve Yzerman — stepped down in July. Now, he'll have to commit to the holdout without receiving a paycheck. For more NHL news, visit Newsweek Sports
