Rupert Grint is set to reprise his role as Ron Weasley, 15 years after we last saw him alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson in the final Harry Potter film. The actor, who is now 38, will join the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway in February 2027. The two-part play – penned by Adolescence screenwriter Jack Thorne, from an original story developed with JK Rowling – focuses on the next generation of Hogwarts students and will see Grint play an older version of the loveable but occasionally hapless Ron.
Grunt said in a statement: “Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting.” Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said: “Rupert is not simply revisiting a role from his past. He is continuing a journey he began as a child and carrying it forward with all the life and experience he has gained since filming concluded, including a career that has taken him from film to television to acclaimed stage work on both Broadway and the West End.
The Slytherin star returned to his role in November last year, but with ticket sales booming, his stint was recently extended until January 2027. Grint is currently scheduled to appear in The Cursed Child until 30 May 2027. The ticket presale will begin on Tuesday 1 September.
The announcement comes after the the latest casting news for HBO’s Harry Potter TV series, which will debut on Christmas Day. It was announced that Kit Harington will play Gilderoy Lockhart, replacing Nicholas Hoult after the Nosferatu actor dropped out due to “scheduling issues”. Warwick Davis is the only star from the films confirmed to reprise their role in the series.
