The New Orleans Saints have no plans to make a bold move at quarterback as the team trims its roster to 53 players by Sunday's deadline. Saints second-year quarterback Tyler Shough is set to be the starter, with Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson serving as backups. Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, New Orleans plans to keep Rattler on the initial 53-man roster.
The Saints have received trade interest on the third-year quarterback, but the team plans to keep him as the QB2 behind Shough. "Rattler will serve as quality depth behind Tyler Shough, barring a change." Rattler, 25, was selected by the Saints in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
He's appeared in 16 games and started 14 games during his first two seasons. He's thrown for 2,903 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Rattler appears to be well liked by his teammates.
In January, Saints wide receiver Chris Olave told reporters that Rattler deserves another chance to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. "I feel like Spencer’s done a great job when he was back there starting at quarterback. He deserves another opportunity to be able to be a starting quarterback in this league." Unless the Saints have a change of heart, it doesn't appear Rattler will get an opportunity to start for another team this season.
Rattler was named the starter for the Saints before the 2025 season. By Oct. 28, Shough earned the starting job. Shough went 5-4 as a starter last season, completing 67.6 percent of his passes for 2,384 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions.
