Sarina Wiegman has extended her contract to continue as the head coach of England women for Euro 2029. Her deal was due to expire after next summer’s World Cup and this gives her the chance to lead the Lionesses to three European championship titles in a row. Wiegman, who took on the role in September 2021, also led her native Netherlands to Euros glory in 2017 and has reached the final of the past five major tournaments, twice finishing as a World Cup runner-up.

This is Wiegman’s second contract extension with England and opens the possibility that she could coach Team GB at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles should the team qualify. Wiegman, who turns 57 next Monday, will continue to be assisted by Janneke Bijl, Arvid Smit and Darren Ward. Wiegman had refused to be drawn on questions over her future before England’s two games against Greece during the recent international break, but the Chelsea midfielder Keira Walsh last week said “obviously I’d want her to stay” when asked about the head coach’s future.
