Some college football programs, most notably Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers, are making a stir with their recruiting pursuit of former NFL players. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey is one of the many prominent figures pushing back on this pursuit. "The NFL is not a recruiting ground for college football.
It never has been," Sankey said, via YahooSports. Sankey took a strong stance on the debate, standing up for what he believes are the "principles" of the SEC. The conference is taking serious action to prevent NFL players from returning to the college football field.
"I think it's important to stand up for principles. Even if people disagree," Sankey added on Thursday, via ESPN "We've not had people leaving NFL training camps and coming back to college. It's important to stand up for principles." Kiffin argues that he's just doing what's best for his football program, giving them the best chance to win games this coming season.
"I don't make decisions on what benefits me personally and what it does to my reputation or how people outside of here view me," he said earlier this week. "Even if it's a couple of players that maybe don't even start, if it makes your team better, and it's legal to do, and the players want it, I'll take the hit publicly for it. That's my job." LSU will open up its 2026 season with a highly-anticipated matchup against the Clemson Tigers on Saturday night.
