Shai Gilgeous-Alexander doesn’t hesitate when asked who the NBA’s best player is, and his record-setting run helps explain why.

Since the blockbuster trade that sent him from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has evolved into one of the greatest players in NBA history. At 28, he has already accomplished more than most players do in an entire career, with four All-Star nods, four first-team All-Pro honors, and two league MVPs. He also won Oklahoma City its first NBA title in 2025 and earned Finals MVP along the way.

This past season, the Thunder went toe-to-toe with the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, and were one win away from a Finals matchup with the New York Knicks that could have seen them walk away NBA champs. Speaking recently with Time’s Sean Gregory, Gilgeous-Alexander made it clear that, with everything he has done, there’s no debate over who the best player in the league is right now. I think the efficiency that I do it at is best-player-in-the-NBA efficiency.

I think everybody picks up a basketball or a soccer ball or a football or a tennis ball to win the game, the match, whatever it is. And I’ve done my fair share of winning in these past couple years.” More news: Dylan Harper Has Spurs’ Brass Buzzing Ahead of NBA Season More news: Damian Lillard Fires Back at Doubters With Strong Ja Morant Message SGA still has plenty of years left, and he has already made his mark in the NBA record books. He broke Wilt Chamberlain’s record for consecutive games with 20 or more points, a mark that had stood since 1963, hitting 127 straight with a 35-point win over the Celtics.

During that streak, he averaged 32.5 points on 53.5% shooting and had five 50-point games, including a career-high 55. The Thunder went 103-24 over that stretch. Last season, he averaged 31.1 points, along with a career-high 6.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game, shooting 55.3% from the field, 38.6% from three, and 87.9% from the free-throw line.

He scores from everywhere and does it with elite efficiency. He gets to the rim whenever he wants, draws fouls regularly, and has one of the best pull-up jumpers in the game. He has shown no signs of slowing down and the Thunder remain firmly in championship contention with Gilgeous-Alexander still ascending alongside Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams.
