Finally, viewers will get some closure on a season one loose end

After four years of wondering whether the sharp-witted MI5 agent had truly seen the last of Slough House, viewers finally have their answer. Olivia Cooke is set to reprise her role as Sidonie “Sid” Baker in the forthcoming sixth season of the Apple TV spy drama, bringing back one of the show’s most conspicuous loose ends. Cooke’s character was last seen in season one during which she was apparently killed by a bullet to the head.

Despite that, speculation as to whether she could return has continued to grow ever since spurred on by Christopher Chung’s Roddy Ho telling Jack Lowden’s River that he had uncovered evidence to suggest Sid may still be alive. Now those hopes have been answered in the first trailer of the show’s sixth series. Released on Tuesday (18 August), the two-minute clip begins with Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb questioning Kristen Scott Thomas’s Diana Taverner over the deaths of his team.

Sid crops up in the final moments of the trailer as she greets Lowden’s character, saying: “Hello, River.” Of course, this revelation won’t come as a shock to readers of Mick Herron’s books, on which the series is based, but for everyone else Cooke’s return will be a welcome surprise. In addition to giving fans a glimpse of Sid, the trailer also briefly shows Paul Higgins, who looks to be back in his season one role, Struan Loy. The synopsis for the forthcoming series reads: “Season 6 sees the Slow Horses on the run as Diana Taverner embroils them all in a fatally high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge.” New subscribers only. £9.99/mo. after free trial.

Plan auto-renews until cancelled. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent. Cooke’s return comes in a moment of change for the hit series, with this coming season being the first without long-time showrunner Will Smith, whose exit was announced last year.

Gaby Chiappe will be stepping in. The returning cast includes Oldman, Lowden, Chung, Thomas, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, Joanna Scanlan, and Aimee-Ffion Edwards. Lowden is among the rumoured frontrunners to be the next James Bond, with many speculating that his stint as a spy on Slow Horses impressed the new 007 casting director Nina Gold, who incidentally also cast the Apple TV drama.

Also joining the cast this time around is Am I Being Unreasonable? star Lenny Rush. The new series of Slow Horses will premiere on 16 September, with episodes released weekly until 21 October. Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies
