South Park is celebrating its win at the 78th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards by trolling President Donald Trump. The animated comedy, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, is known for its satirical skewering of subjects across the political spectrum. On Sunday, South Park took home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program at the ceremony in Los Angeles.
On social media, the official South Park account posted an image of the show's characters, and a cartoon Trump appears front and center with his trousers down while holding an Emmy. The graphic's text overlay said, "You finally got your Emmy." The caption added, "Congratulations to Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and the entire South Park team on their Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program!" South Park's 27th season, which aired last July to September, routinely ridiculed the president. The premiere episode, "Sermon on the 'Mount," which won the Emmy, featured multiple jokes at Trump's expense and depicted him naked in bed with Satan.
The storyline of the season as a whole largely focused on Satan and Trump becoming pregnant. The White House criticized the president's portrayal in the show. Spokesperson Taylor Rogers said after the season premiere, "This show hasn't been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention." The 27th season of South Park followed a hiatus of about two and a half years and came after creators Parker and Stone reached a $1.5 billion streaming deal with Paramount.
Trump has, over the years, spoken out against the Emmys, accusing the awards show of being rigged and criticizing the fact that his reality television show, The Apprentice, never won. In 2012, Trump posted multiple times about the awards show, writing, "The Emmys were horrendous…the absolute worst show!" In a separate post, he wrote, "The Emmys are all politics, that's why, despite nominations, The Apprentice never won—even though it should have many times over." In 2016, Trump's Democratic opponent referenced the posts during a presidential debate. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, "There was even a time when he didn't get an Emmy for his TV program three years in a row, and he started tweeting that the Emmys were rigged against him." Trump interrupted her to say, "Should have gotten it." The Apprentice ran from 2004 to 2017 and received eight Emmy nominations.
South Park revolves around four boys—Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman and Kenny McCormick—and follows their lives in the titular Colorado town. Since its release in 1997, the show has been infamous for using profanity and dark humor and satirizing topical issues. It previously ridiculed presidents such as George W.
The "Sermon on the 'Mount" episode mentioned the ongoing fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein records and joked about the cancellation of Stephen Colbert's Late Show. In the trailer for season 27, Canada goes to war against the U.S., and France takes back the Statue of Liberty. The show also ridiculed billionaire Elon Musk through the character of Randy Marsh, who said, "I'm just going to do some ketamine and f*** around with the government a little." In another episode, Vice President JD Vance walked into Trump and Satan's bedroom and asked, "Would you like me to apply the baby oil to Satan's a******, boss?" South Park has a history of satirizing Trump prior to the show's 27th season.
