I love a good nonsense chorus, and the latest from Spirit Ghost is great reason to scream some "bah bah bahs." The Boston band's new single "Dungeon Crawler" brings to mind '60s garage rock with a balanced psychedelic swirl. And The Mysterians, the King Khan and the BBQ Show, and that one Ryan Gosling album Dead Man's Bones. The single is from their forthcoming EP Dark Magic that's out in January.
Not only is the band's name appropriate for the spooky season we're in, but the single is also unnerving. "Momma I hear your call from behind the dungeon wall," goes one line that feels so sad to me. The band's Alex Whitelaw shared that the song is about "the psychological toll of modern living — feeling trapped in circumstances that make people increasingly exhausted, disposable and powerless.
The song moves between frustration, defiance and resignation, asking what happens when struggling against your circumstances eventually gives way to simply learning how to crawl through them." Dark Magic is out 1/29 via Happen Twice.
