The Pittsburgh Steelers have been without running back Rico Dowdle since he suffered a toe injury against the New England Patriots in Week 2. When speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Dowdle revealed some painful details about what went down in that 20-3 loss. Dowdle said he dislocated one of his toes twice.

After dislocating it the first time, he convinced team doctors that he was good to re-enter the game — where he dislocated the same toe a second time. "The first time I did it, I came to the sideline and I was like, 'I think my toe broke,'" Dowdle said, via SI. "So I went to the tent and it was dislocated and they popped it back in, did the X-rays.

Nothing was broken or whatever, but once they popped it back in, I felt good, so I'm like, 'I wanna go back in the game and play.'" With Dowdle out, Jaylen Warren has been solid as the Steelers' lead back. The fifth-year veteran has 309 rushing yards and 143 receiving yards through the first four games of the season. Dowdle says he's improving "day-by-day" as he looks to get back on the field.

"Feeling alright," Dowdle said Tuesday. "Getting better, taking it day-by-day. As far as getting back on the field, we're gonna see how it go tomorrow but I'm supposed to be working in a little this week so we'll see how I feel." The 2-2 Steelers will face off against the Indianapolis Colts in a Week 5 matchup on Sunday.
