Every offseason comes with the same quiet worry about how long Steph Curry has left, and whether the next deal will be his last one in the Bay. Curry is 38 and heading into his 18th season. The front office has waited on him for weeks, and so have fans.
Now, the face of the franchise has spoken. ESPN's Anthony Slater reported that Curry is going to take some time before he signs his contract extension with the Warriors. Curry himself explained why there is no need to rush things.
"It's going to happen at the right time, once I have all the information I need to make the decision that is right ... If I don't sign, it won't affect me in terms of my play or carrying that weight. But I'll make the decision when I'm ready," Curry said.
Curry became eligible on Aug. 29 for an extension of up to two years and $136.7 million. He is set to earn $62.6 million this season, the final year of his current deal. And the Warriors are not pushing him either way.
They handed him a menu of options instead: the max, a smaller deal, or simply waiting. Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler are all on expiring deals, which could open up over $100 million in cap space next summer if he waits. On the court, he still carries this team.
Curry averaged 26.6 points in 43 games last season, and the Warriors went 37-45 with him missing nearly half the year. With Butler still rehabbing a torn ACL, that load falls on Curry once again as camp opens next week in Hawaii ahead of the Oct. 21 opener against the Lakers. For most fans, the timing hardly matters.
