The Dallas Cowboys suffered a devastating loss to the visiting Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, blowing a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter. The Dallas defense crumbled down the stretch, allowing backup quarterback Gardner Minshew to complete 17 of his 23 pass attempts for 188 yards and three touchdowns. The game ended with a 33-30 final score in overtime, marking the Cowboys' fifth loss of the 2026 season already.
The Cowboys defense allows more total yards per game than any other team in the league (385.4). The rush defense is also the worst in the league, averaging 152.8 yards allowed per game on the ground. The Cowboys' defensive unit is currently led by first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
But if it was up to broadcast personality Stephen A. Smith, that wouldn't be the case. Smith strongly urged team owner Jerry Jones to replace Parker with current ESPN analyst/former NFL coach Rex Ryan.
"Bottom line is, he should call ESPN today. ... Rex Ryan should not be on 'NFL Countdown' anymore, even though I want him on there. He should not be on 'Get Up' anymore, even though I love seeing him on there," Smith said.
"He should be the new defensive coordinator of the for the Dallas Cowboys and come to the rescue for America's Team." The Cowboys are 3-5 to open up the 2026 NFL season. This coming Sunday, Dallas will look to get back on track in a Week 9 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
