The Detroit Tigers will call up right-handed pitcher River Ryan for his debut with the big league club in Monday's game. Ryan, 28, came to the Tigers as one of the central pieces of the blockbuster deal which sent Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline, but is yet to make his first appearance for them in the big leagues as he worked his way back from a hamstring injury in the minors. The right-hander made two appearances for the Toledo Mud Hens in Triple-A after making his way off of the injured list, posting a 3.86 ERA through 4.2 innings while striking out four batters.
Prior to the trade, Ryan pitched in eight games for the Oklahoma City Comets, allowing 18 earned runs in 36.1 innings pitched, striking out 43 batters during his time in the Dodgers' organization. Despite his prospect status, Ryan spent some time with the Dodgers in 2024, making four appearances for them as a starter. He threw 20.1 innings, striking out 18 batters and posting an impressive 1.33 ERA.
His season ended early that year, though, as he underwent Tommy John surgery before missing all of 2025. The Dodgers kept him off of the Opening Day roster despite a decent showing in spring training, and he suffered a couple of injuries in MiLB before they could ever call him up. Now healthy, though, Ryan will look to make an impact in his first MLB appearance in over two years.
Ryan's first MLB appearance since 2024 will come against the Washington Nationals at 5:40 p.m. CDT, and will serve as a good challenge for the right-hander as he eases his way back into MLB. The Nationals have an explosive offense, as they currently have the sixth-best wRC+ in MLB and have scored the third-most runs, following only the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs.
The right-hander will look to keep things under control against one of the best offenses in the league Monday as he aims to cement himself as a mainstay in the Tigers' rotation heading into next season.
