Texas Tech Coach Unashamedly Admits He’ll Sign Players Cut by NFL Teams It appears Texas Tech has learned nothing from the Brendan Sorsby debacle. Months after the school was investigated by the NCAA and faced possible sanctions because of Sorsby’s admitted gambling issues (Sorsby has since lost his college eligibility), Texas Tech may find itself in another controversy. Head coach Joey McGuire told reporters this week that he would consider adding a player to his roster who was signed to an NFL team but didn’t make the final cut and has another year of college eligibility thanks to the TRO granted by a Luisana judge last week.
While not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison with the Sorsby situation, there are some parallels with Texas Tech playing in the gray area of players who could potentially be prohibited from playing by the Big 12, should it pass a rule similar to ones the Big Ten and SEC passed earlier this week that ban players who signed NFL contracts from playing in those respective conferences. I was checking with our guys today, what’s the Big 12 going to do? So, again, it’s going to be interesting.
We’ve been monitoring, for the last week or so, how we can add, if possible, somebody to make this team better. We’re not looking at anybody that is in the NFL and could possibly be cut. We haven’t called any NFL coaches.
We haven’t scouted any NFL players that I think some teams have done, but we’re definitely going to look.” The SEC also announced severe disciplinary action would be taken against any coaches and teams that didn’t abide by the rule and played former NFL players anyway. Other conferences like the Big 12 could adopt similar policies, meaning if Texas Tech did sign one of those players, it would open up a can of worms for the school. But McGuire admitted the uncertainty of this uncharted territory is forcing him and the university to tread lightly.
He was on their team last year, he got cut in minicamp, he got an injunction from a Texas judge and he’s been with them the whole time. I don’t know if the new rule would affect him at all, because he didn’t sign an NFL contract.
