Being a mom is the hardest thing you can do, and if you want to make it harder, you can be like me and feel guilty that the mental load of motherhood is putting your marriage at risk. My husband is a wonderful man. He's the type of guy who if I said I needed a weekend to lie in bed and watch TV all day, he'd agree that I needed to relax and then take our son for the entire weekend and probably ask me 10 times during the day if I needed water.
Anyone who claims they don't have marital issues is very suspicious to me. Like most moms, the bulk of keeping our lives functioning properly falls on me. So, while I'm trying to finish all the work I need to get done before 5 p.m., when I have to run from my desk to the living room to relieve my nanny, my brain is also thinking: "Remember to order the groceries, you need to change Theo's doctor's appointment to align with his new nap schedule, don’t forget to call the super about the leaking toilet, be sure to pull the chicken out of the freezer by 3 p.m. so it’s defrosted for dinner, if you don't get that baby gift out by Thursday it won't be there in time, you need to tell the nanny there’s no story time on Tuesdays, get that pasta recipe from mom...” Which means that by the time 7:30 p.m. rolls around and my son is asleep and my husband and I are finally alone, just the two of us, I am mentally -- and depending on how clingy my 30-pound toddler has been that day – physically exhausted.
