Due to sustained demand, Imax is once again extending the run for “The Odyssey” in Christopher Nolan‘s preferred big-screen format through Sept. 30, stretching its historic run on 70mm to 11 weeks. For context, “The Odyssey” has generated more in Imax than many movies have earned across all screens and formats in post-pandemic times. Imax’s coveted 70mm screens — of which there are only 41 in the world — have contributed a stunning $66 million, translating to $1.6 million per location.
With euphoric reviews and word-of-mouth, “The Odyssey” has been a box office juggernaut with $1.55 billion worldwide. It’s a mind-boggling tally for any movie these days, but especially an R-rated sword-and-sandal adventure that’s nearly three hours long. Among the many records, “The Odyssey” is the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, overtaking 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” ($1.338 billion), as well as Nolan’s biggest film ever, surpassing 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.1 billion).
Much of the hype around premium large formats is because “The Odyssey” is the first feature that’s shot entirely with Imax cameras. (Other tentpoles incorporate Imax’s technology for select sequences.) Imax shared a fun fact that during production that Nolan used 2.1 million feet of film, longer than the distance from Toronto to New York. Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal and John Leguizamo round out the starry ensemble.
