Tony Parker spent nearly two decades learning under head coach Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs. Now, as Parker begins the next chapter of his basketball career, it appears some of those lessons are following him to the sidelines. The Hall of Fame point guard went viral after delivering a fiery halftime speech to his ASVEL players during their EuroLeague season opener against Maccabi Tel Aviv.
ASVEL entered halftime trailing 48-37, and the four-time NBA champion was clearly unhappy with what he had seen from his team. The viral video from inside the locker room showed a passionate Parker demanding more from his players before they returned to the floor. Let's play [expletive] defense,” Parker said to his team during halftime.
Respect what we say with the coach. Don't do whatever you want. If not, you're going to come sit next to me on the bench because I want to win this [expletive] game.
We are 14-15; we can't make stupid mistakes like that. Make sure we call our plays, and we'll be fine. We're going to win this game on defense.
As long as we play defense and we stop them, we'll be fine. And then offensively, we go. I want five guys on the court every single time in the second half who will play hard with a lot of energy and listen to what we say.
Let's go.” ASVEL responded by outscoring Maccabi 27-13 in the third quarter and eventually completed the comeback with an 85-82 victory. For longtime Spurs fans, Parker’s emphatic approach may have looked familiar. Parker spent 17 seasons playing for Popovich in San Antonio after the Spurs selected him with the 28th overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft.
