The Kansas City Chiefs tight end delivered a vintage performance in Sunday night's 33-30 overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts, catching nine of 11 targets for 101 yards and a touchdown. In the process, Kelce passed Marshall Faulk for the most career yards after the catch in NFL history. Kelce responded to the achievement on the latest episode of his New Heights podcast.
"This is by far the craziest and, honestly, one of the coolest accomplishments I've ever had," Kelce said. His older brother, former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, noted that the feat "came out of nowhere." Travis agreed, admitting that he didn't realize he was on the precipice of history. "I had no idea I was even in the ballpark," Travis said.
"I didn't even know I was in the top five, top 10." The 36-year-old feels honored to top a list headlined by NFL legends, including some big playmakers from his youth. "I grew up watching a guy like Terrell Owens take slants to the (expletive) house and being like, man, it must be really cool to be that fast and do that kind of stuff with a football in your hand," Travis said. Kelce shared the credit with his teammates and coaches, but he acknowledged that it feels good to know he's added immense value after the catch.
"I've had unbelievable playcalling. I've had unbelievable players around me. You don't get this kind of stuff without having the guys around you to help you get these yards," he said.
"But at the same time, man, it's a pretty cool stat to be a part of that when I got the ball in my hands, I'm doing the most I can with it. And it's been proven throughout the history of the NFL that I've been pretty good at it."
